Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, unusual consumer behavior oc-curred, such as buying large quantities of basic necessities. The re-searchers investigated this behavior when fears of consumer market disruption start to occur in order to determine human behavior in this unique situation. Based on the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) framework, a structural model that links multiple online in-formation sources (environmental stimuli) and two behavioral re-sponses, unusual buying and self-isolation, was constructed. To test the proposed model, we collected data from 236 respondents in In-donesia through an online survey and conducted an analysis using PLS-SEM. The results of analysis show a strong correlation between self-isolation and intention to make an unusual purchase, and pro-vide empirical evidence that the reported consumer behavior was di-rectly related to the estimated time spent in self-isolation. Further-more, results of the present study show that information overload was a strong predictor of cyberchondria. Perceived severity of situ-ation and cyberchondria had a significant effect on people’s inten-tions to make unusual purchases and voluntary self-isolation.
